“The Fourth Day”
(August 4, 2008)

Genesis 1:14-19 “And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning the fourth day.”

On the second day God created “sky” now two days later He places in the sky “two great lights”. We call them the sun and the moon. The scriptures tell us they are to “serve as signs” marking the days, years and seasons of the earth. It seems as though nonchalantly and like an after thought God “also made the stars”. The sun, moon and stars are to “give light on the earth” as well as “govern the day and the night” and to “separate light from darkness”.

If the sun, moon and stars were created to “serve” marking days, years and seasons as well as to “govern” the day and the night why do we serve them and allow them to govern us. Look at your calendar. Is it filled with tasks and appointments that you “have to do”? Do you have parties and events penciled in your calendar that you would “like to do” but will probably not find the time to do them. Maybe you do not even write them down as you know you will not “find” the time to do them. If this is the case then I would say you are serving the days, years and seasons and allowing the days and nights to govern you.

How can we break away from this transposition of responsibilities? Jesus showed us the way many, many times in the scriptures. He continually separated Himself from the crowds and demands that were placed upon Him to rest, meditate and pray. I can already hear the groans and moans from you! “How can I possibly find the time to get away by myself to rest, meditate and pray?” Simple! Every time you sit down on the toilet, leave the magazine in the basket, fold your hands, close your eyes and thank God for His grace and love.

The fourth day. Govern the days, nights and years and have them serve you!

Keep Praying!!!
